Alexandra Dunnison, Manager / Cognitive Instructor
Alexandra has a passion for teaching. She pursued teaching as a profession and received her bachelor's degree from Vassar College in New York with a double major in Developmental Psychology and Education, and later a master's degree in Education from Harvard University. She has since worked in the field of learning for over 25 years. Alexandra has taught at the pre-school, elementary school, high school and adult levels. She also has worked in publishing at some of the leading educational publishing companies in Canada and the U.S., such as Scholastic, Inc., helping to develop reading programs and other educational resources. Over the years she has seen many students with learning difficulties and was concerned about the lack of knowledge, training and resources to help these students. Upon finding out about the Eaton Arrowsmith School, she immediately became intrigued and excited about this cutting edge program with its basis in neuroplasticity. Alexandra has been with Eaton Arrowsmith School and Eaton Brain Improvement Centre for over four years. She is even more committed to this program that has given many students a new lease on life. She has seen tremendous changes in cognitive capacity for so many of the students and she continues to learn new things both about the science and the miracle of the brain. Also, daily she has increasing respect for the resiliency and hard work of these exceptional students. In her new role as Manager of EBIC, Alexandra is excited to have the opportunity to continue to enrich the lives of the current students as well as to reach out and inform new students about the possibilities we can help make happen here at Eaton Brain Improvement Centre.

Sandra Heusel, Admissions
After receiving an undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Victoria, Sandra worked as a Special Education Assistant with the Vancouver School Board. She also volunteered and tutored students with learning differences through the Learning Disabilities Association in Vancouver for four years. She  then went on to receive a teaching certificate in Elementary Education from Simon Fraser University and worked as a resource teacher for the Vancouver School Board for five years, during which time she received her diploma in Special Education from UBC. Over the past ten years, through her work with Howard Eaton, she has had the opportunity to help many children and adults better understand their learning styles.  When she began working with Howard at Eaton Arrowsmith School, at its inception in 2005, she was honoured to be given the role of Head Cognitive Teacher. She says that watching the students build their capacity to learn and become more confident, capable individuals is truly a joy. Upon returning from maternity leave with her daughter Kate, last year she took on a different role, as the school’s Director of Admissions. She very much enjoys introducing our new families to the Arrowsmith Program and the wonderful community spirit we have at both Eaton Arrowsmith School and Eaton Brain Improvement Centre.

Howard Eaton, Founder

Howard developed a life-long interest in the field of learning differences and disabilities as a result of his own struggles with Dyslexia, diagnosed when he was in Grade 2. Fortunately, he received early remediation and had charismatic adults in his life that guided him towards possibilities and not failure. He completed his B.A. in Psychology at UBC and went on to earn a M.Ed. at Boston University in Special Education. As well, he has been fortunate to work as a Sessional Instructor at UBC in the Department of Educational Psychology and Special Education teaching courses on Learning Disabilites to teachers in training. Eaton Brain Improvement Centre uses the Arrowsmith Program, based on the program developed by Barbara Arrowsmith Young from the Arrowsmith School in Toronto, ON. Over the last 25 years she has developed a cognitive remediation program that has provided support for hundreds of children and young adults with learning disabilities. She has provided new insights into learning differences and how best to improve neurodevelopmental functioning in children and young adults. The purpose of Eaton Brain Improvement Centre is to improve opportunities for further education and employment. As well as being the founder of Eaton Brain Improvement Centre, Howard Eaton has also founded Eaton Arrowsmith School and Magnussen School, both of which are located at the University of British Columbia.
